Floristry: Week 4

This is the result of week 4 of my floristry course - a hand tied with a collar frame.

I wasn't sure about the whole collar thing at first but I actually really like it in the final design and I can now see what an impact this makes. I covered it in pink and green floral fabric. The first photo is mine, and the second two show some of the designs from other women on my course.

Floristry: Week 3

This is the outcome from week 3 of my floristry course - a table design incorporating candles. This was quite difficult to photograph well because it is so long, but up close I think it really makes an impact.

We also lined them all up at college to see what impact a lot of these designs would make, and you can see how effective this is in the photos below.

Hand Tied Practice

I said in yesterday's post that I would need some practice at hand tieds, which I have done, but still think I might need a bit more practice before I feel really confident with the technique.

I just bought some simple roses and alstromeria from Tesco and had a go. The leaves were a bit past their best though so it was a bit messy, but it was really just for the practice...

Floristry: Week 2

This was the creation from the second week of my floristry course - a hand tied with a structure.

The hand tied technique is rather fiddly - you would never think it to look at a bouquet but there is a very specific way of putting the flowers together. That one might take a bit of practice!

Floristry: Week 1

Yesterday was actually the 5th week of my Floristry course but as I've only just started posting I've got a bit of catching up to do!

So this is what I made on the first week. The first unit is 'Hand Tieds and Arrangements' and runs for 10 weeks so half way through now! I was so impressed with this as my very first real arrangement (so modest!) but for someone who's only experience has been helping out at one wedding I think this is quite an achievement. The course is guided and the arrangements are based off a design from the course leader but there are always ways to make your structure unique and personal to you.

Wedding Flowers

My brother got married in early September in All Saints Church, Great Braxted (followed by an amazing reception at the Braxted Park Estate) and me, my mum and my aunt did the flowers (with a little held from the wedding coordinators at the church).

Below are some of the photos from the church. The reception flowers were really simple, with three different stems - white rose, lilac rose and gypsophila - in decorative glass vases in the middle of the tables and three little bowls of flowers on the top table with some scattered petals. I unfortunately don't have any good photos of these as everyone was already sat round the tables by the time the wedding party got to the venue (I was a bridesmaid) it all looked lovely though :)

Welcome to my new blog!

Hi, I'm Hannah and I'm currently studying Floristry at Writtle College. I started out as a Graphic Designer (view my design blog here) and I used to always think that was what I wanted to do, but at the start of last summer I decided that I didn't want to do that anymore and I wanted to be a florist instead. Bit of a leap but I think they're both connected, they're both creative industries anyway!

I had a trial run helping out with the flowers at my brother's wedding in September (I'll post about that later) and then knew for definite that floristry was what I wanted to do. So I enrolled at Writtle College and I am now four weeks in to the Intermediate College Certificate. This is just a hobby course as for work commitments I couldn't do the Diploma this year, but next year I hope to become a part time student and work my way towards my new dream.

So that's a very brief overview of how this blog came about. I am absolutely loving my course so far and I'm so glad I made the decision to do it. A career change can be a big thing but if it means you get to do a job you love then it's definitely worth it. And that's my motivational speech over :)
